South-Central African country, Zambia, has inaugurated its largest grid-connected project, knowns as Chisamba solar power plant, with a capacity of 100 megawatts (100 MW) to be added to the countryโ€™s national grid.

The President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, launched the projects on Monday, 30th June 2025, alongside high-profile officials of the country.

This is the countryโ€™s largest grid-connected solar initiative to date.

Constructed by PowerChina International Group Limited, the plant will supply electricity to First Quantum Minerals (FQM), a leading copper mining company, under a 13-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) arranged by GreenCo Power Services.ย

This project, valued at $100 million and financed by Stanbic Bank and ZESCO, represents Zambiaโ€™s largest grid-connected solar facility, aimed at reducing reliance on hydropower amid a severe drought affecting the region.

The project details and financial structure

The Chisamba Solar PV Plant, located in Central Province, integrates a 100 MW solar array, a 33/132-kV step-up substation, and an expanded existing substation.ย

ZESCO, Zambiaโ€™s state-owned utility, and Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation (KNBEPC) each contributed $30 million in equity, with Stanbic Bank Zambia providing a $70 million loan to cover the remaining costs.

โ€œThis financial structure demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in delivering clean energy,โ€ said KNBEPC CEO Boyd Kanchela.

Strategic impact on energy security

Zambia, heavily dependent on hydropower, faces energy shortages due to low water levels at Kariba Dam. The Chisamba plant addresses this by diversifying the energy mix.ย

โ€œOur goal is to ensure sufficient electricity for both domestic use and export,โ€ Hichilema said, stressing that additional solar projects are in the pipeline as Zambia works to diversify its energy mix.

The project aligns with Zambiaโ€™s ambition to add 1,000 MW of solar capacity by the end of 2025, reducing reliance on electricity imports from South Africa and Mozambique.ย

The commissioning, as stated in the Xinhua report, reflects strengthened Zambia-China ties, with Chinese Embassy Counsellor Wang Li noting the projectโ€™s role in elevating bilateral cooperation.

Impact on first quantum minerals

FQM benefits from reliable renewable energy to power its operations, including the Sentinel and Kansanshi mines.ย

This supports Zambiaโ€™s copper-driven economy while promoting sustainability.ย

Operations are to begin in July 2025, adding another 100 MW, further enhancing grid capacity.ย

The project sets a precedent for private-sector-led energy initiatives, with GreenCoโ€™s innovative PPA model ensuring long-term viability.
