Nigeria’s mega Dangote refinery has exported 456,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products to five African countries, strengthening Nigeria’s role in fuel supply across the continent.
The refinery disclosed this in a statement, noting that the products were shipped through 12 cargoes sold by international traders to countries including Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo.
According to the refinery, the exports followed its achievement of full production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day in February 2026.
The products exported include Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, as well as diesel produced to Euro 5 standard.
The refinery management explained that the products were sold on a Free On Board (FOB) basis to international traders who handled the delivery to the destination countries.
Refinery says it can meet local demand
In addition, Dangote Refinery said the export of fuel shows that it can meet Nigeria’s local fuel demand while also supplying other African countries.
The company stated that many African countries have depended on fuel imports from outside the continent for many years, often buying lower quality fuel.
It added that the refinery is now supplying cleaner fuel to countries in West Africa and other parts of the continent.
According to the statement, supplying fuel to nearby countries will reduce the long distance involved in fuel imports, help reduce supply delays, and lower costs in regional fuel markets.
The refinery also said the development would improve trade relations between Nigeria and other African countries that depend on imported fuel.
Global oil market concerns
The export development is happening at a time when there are concerns about global fuel supply due to rising tension in the Middle East.
Reports show that tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s major oil routes, has slowed due to military activities in the Gulf region.
The situation has pushed global oil prices above $113 per barrel in recent weeks, raising concerns about inflation and rising energy costs in many countries.
Growing role of the refinery
The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, is currently the largest single-train refinery in the world with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.
With the export of refined products to several African countries, the refinery is gradually becoming a major supplier of fuel within Africa, reducing the continent’s dependence on fuel imports from Europe and other regions.
Industry analysts say the refinery’s operations could change fuel supply patterns in Africa and also position Nigeria as a key fuel supply hub in the region.
