Italian energy major Eni has announced a significant gas and condensate discovery offshore Egypt, a development expected to strengthen the country’s energy supply outlook amid ongoing global market disruptions.

The company confirmed that the discovery was made following the drilling of the Denise W-1 exploration well in the Temsah concession, located in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Preliminary estimates indicate the field contains about 2 trillion cubic feet of gas initially in place, along with approximately 130 million barrels of associated condensates, according to the company.

Eni said the discovery would support Egypt’s efforts to rebuild its gas reserves and increase domestic production at a time when output has been declining.

“The discovery will help Eni to support Egypt’s goal of boosting gas reserves and increasing production,” the company said, as reported by Reuters.

Egypt has in recent years faced declining natural gas output, forcing it to rely more on imports to meet domestic demand.

The situation has been further complicated by global supply disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected fuel availability and pricing across several markets.

The new find is therefore expected to play a critical role in stabilising supply, particularly as the country seeks to maintain its position as a regional gas hub.

Strategic location enables fast-track development

According to details released by the company, the discovery is located about 70 kilometres offshore Egypt in water depths of approximately 95 metres, and lies less than 10 kilometres from existing infrastructure.

This proximity is expected to significantly reduce development costs and timelines.

Eni noted that the location offers “substantial synergies for a fast-track development,” allowing the company to quickly tie the new discovery into existing production facilities.

The Denise field is operated by Eni with a 50 percent working interest, in partnership with BP. Operations are carried out through Petrobel, a joint venture between Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.

The exploration well was drilled under a renewed concession agreement signed in July 2025, which extended the Temsah concession for an additional 20 years.

This long-term agreement provided the framework for continued exploration and development activities in the area.

Regional energy pressure

The discovery comes at a time when energy markets across Africa and Europe are under pressure due to geopolitical tensions, particularly disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict, which has affected key shipping routes and global fuel supplies.

Egypt, which had previously positioned itself as a gas exporter, has in recent years faced supply constraints that forced it to import liquefied natural gas to meet domestic needs.

The addition of new reserves from the Temsah concession is therefore seen as a strategic boost, helping to reduce reliance on imports and stabilise the domestic energy market.

Outlook for production and supply

While full development timelines have not yet been disclosed, the combination of significant reserves and proximity to infrastructure suggests that production could be ramped up relatively quickly compared to greenfield projects.

For Eni, the discovery reinforces its long-standing presence in Egypt’s energy sector, where it has been a key player in major gas developments, including the Zohr field.

As global energy demand continues to shift amid geopolitical uncertainties, discoveries such as Denise are expected to play an important role in enhancing supply resilience and supporting regional energy security.
