The Nigeria electricity distribution companies (DisCos) has recorded a total sum of ₦466.69 billion as revenue collected from customers in the third quarter of 2024.

This is contained in the quarterly report of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) published on their website, and obtained by Energy in Africa.

The collection includes the revenue generation by the eleven distribution companies across the country.

Meanwhile. the report shows that collection efficiency of the DisCos experienced a decline in the third quarter of 2024.

Collection efficiency, a measure of the revenue collected by DisCos as a percentage of the total billed to customers, dropped to 74.55% in Q3 2024 from 79.31% in Q2 2024.

This represents a 4.76 percentage point (pp) decline over the same period.

The data reveals that ₦626.02 billion was billed to customers in Q3 2024, only ₦466.69 billion was recovered, leaving a shortfall of ₦159.33 billion.

By comparison, ₦543.64 billion was billed in Q2 2024, with ₦431.16 billion collected, resulting in a higher efficiency rate.

The report highlights persistent challenges facing DisCos, including customer dissatisfaction with service quality, inadequate metering, and unwillingness to pay bills on time.

Among the 11 DisCos, Eko and Ikeja DisCos recorded the highest collection efficiencies in Q3, achieving 84.40% and 83.78%, respectively. In contrast, Kaduna DisCo reported the lowest collection efficiency at 46.42%.

Two DisCos showed improvements in their collection efficiency during the quarter.

Ibadan DisCo recorded a notable 6.59pp increase, while Enugu DisCo achieved a 2.88pp rise. However, nine DisCos experienced declines, with Kaduna (-14.20pp) and Jos (-12.09pp) seeing the most significant drops.

The revenue collection performance is a critical metric for assessing the operational efficiency of DisCos.
