In a landmark move to expand Nigeria’s domestic gas supply footprint, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has signed a gas supply agreement with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd to deliver 80 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of natural gas.

This was disclosed in a press release issued by NNPC Ltd and signed by Olufemi Soneye, the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, on Friday, March 7, 2025, in Abuja.

According to the statement, NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML) — a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd — and NIPCO Gas Ltd, its unincorporated joint venture (UJV) partner, have executed a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd.

The agreement will supply natural gas to Ssonic’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State.

Under the terms of the agreement, which the press release revealed was signed on Thursday, March 6, 2025, the NGML-NIPCO UJV will supply 80 mmscf/d of natural gas to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant over a 20-year period.

This gas supply deal aligns with NNPC Ltd’s broader efforts to boost domestic gas utilization, drive industrial and economic growth, and promote natural gas as a cleaner, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly fuel to combat global warming, NNPC said.

In a related development, Nigerian Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) — another NNPC subsidiary — recently announced a $20 billion investment plan to boost oil and gas production between 2025 and 2030, aimed at supporting Nigeria’s energy expansion and driving economic growth.

This followed a joint venture agreement signed in mid-January between NNPC’s shipping arm, Stena Bulk, and Caverton Marine Limited to establish a new tanker operation.

Unlike the domestic-focused deal with Ssonic Petroleum, the Stena Bulk–Caverton JV is designed to meet regional and international shipping demands for crude oil, refined petroleum products, and LNG.

Ssonic Petroleum Ltd is an indigenous oil and gas service provider in Nigeria’s energy sector, serving clients like NNPC Ltd, Seplat, Shell, NLNG, and others.
