Senegal’s Ministry of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines has projected that the Sangomar field will produce approximately 30.53 million barrels of crude oil in 2025.

This was disclosed in the ministry’s latest production report, which stated that the country aims to sustain a daily output of 100,000 barrels throughout the year.

Sangomar’s January output and export figures

According to the report, crude oil production at the Sangomar field totaled 3.11 million barrels in January 2025. During this period, the country exported and sold three shipments, amounting to 2.89 million barrels, on the international market.

Located about 100 kilometers offshore from Dakar, the Sangomar field is operated by Australia’s Woodside Energy, which began oil extraction at the site on June 11, 2024. The field’s production has played a critical role in Senegal’s economic growth, contributing to the country’s 8.9% GDP expansion in the third quarter of 2024, as reported by the National Agency of Statistics and Demography.

The start of oil and gas production has positioned Senegal as an emerging player in the global energy market. In addition to crude oil from Sangomar, the country is also expecting increased revenue from gas production. The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, operated by BP Plc, is set to begin exports in early 2025.

Cheikh Niane, secretary-general of the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines, noted that these developments would further boost Senegal’s economic performance. “With both crude oil and gas production ramping up, we expect steady growth in our energy sector, which will positively impact the national economy,” he said.

Senegal’s rising oil and gas industry has drawn significant international interest, with investors closely watching the country’s potential to become a key player in Africa’s energy sector.
