The Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed N22 billion as compensation to displaced communities in Niger State for the establishment of the 700MW Zungeru Hydropower Plant.

The government reiterated its commitment to fulfilling obligations to affected people but stressed the need for proper verification of claimants, as the number of communities seeking compensation has risen significantly.

Initially, only 133 communities were identified for compensation by the Ministry of Power. However, during a recent engagement, over 300 communities have come forward, significantly exceeding the initial list. This surge has raised concerns about inflated claims, prompting the government to conduct further verification.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, addressed the issue during a meeting on Thursday with the Compensation and Resettlement Committee in Abuja. While commending Niger State and its communities for their cooperation, the minister noted the challenges posed by the growing number of claims. He confirmed that N22 billion has already been paid, leaving N2.2 billion outstanding.

โ€œThe Federal Government is grateful to the Niger State government over the role the State has played in restraining the affected communities from taking laws into their hands and assuring them of the readiness of the government to meet this obligation to them,โ€ Adelabu said.

Moreover, Niger Stateโ€™s deputy governor, who led the committeeโ€™s delegation, expressed optimism, stating that the positive outcome of the meeting would help assuage the aggrieved communities. He assured that lawsuits filed by misled groups would be withdrawn.

The Zungeru project adds to Niger Stateโ€™s contributions as host to 80% of Nigeriaโ€™s hydropower stations, including Jebba, Kainji, and Shiroro.
