The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has discussed possible gas supplies to Kyiv with the President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, as Ukraine searches for new energy sources amid the global energy crisis linked to tensions in the Middle East.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy disclosed this on Monday in a statement posted on the social media platform X, where he said Ukraine is interested in securing additional energy supplies to support the countryโ€™s energy needs.

โ€œUkraine is interested in additional energy supplies,โ€ Zelenskyy said, noting that energy cooperation was one of the key issues discussed during his conversation with the Mozambican leader.

Ukraine has been searching for alternative energy sources as global energy markets continue to face disruptions following tensions in the Middle East, particularly after a joint United States and Israel military operation in Iran earlier in March disrupted activities around the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the worldโ€™s most important oil transit routes, with about 20 million barrels of oil passing through the route daily. Disruptions to shipping in the area have pushed global oil prices higher and raised concerns about prolonged energy market disruptions.

The situation has contributed to energy supply challenges in different parts of the world, forcing countries to explore new partnerships and supply routes.

Mozambique-Ukraine cooperation

During the discussion, Zelenskyy said Mozambique is also interested in Ukraineโ€™s experience and technology, particularly in strengthening internal security and protecting citizens from security threats.

Both leaders also discussed possible areas of cooperation in digitisation and food security, according to the report. The discussion signals a broader partnership beyond energy, covering technology and agricultural cooperation.

Mozambique is one of Africaโ€™s emerging gas producers, with large liquefied natural gas projects attracting global attention in recent years. Ukraineโ€™s interest in Mozambiqueโ€™s gas resources reflects the growing importance of African energy resources in the global energy market.

Global energy tension continues to affect supply

The global energy crisis has been worsened by geopolitical tensions involving major oil-producing regions, affecting fuel prices, gas supply routes and shipping operations.

Energy analysts say disruptions around major oil and gas transit routes such as the Strait of Hormuz often affect global energy prices and supply chains, especially for countries that rely heavily on imported energy.

Ukraineโ€™s move to explore gas supply from Mozambique is part of broader efforts by countries to secure stable energy supply sources as global energy markets continue to experience uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions.
