Nigeria moves to add 4,000MW to the national grid as the FGN Power Company (FGNPC) launches a partnership with Ebonyi and Enugu states to deliver the transmission projects over the next three years.

The initiative forms part of the ongoing implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a federal programme aimed at improving transmission and distribution infrastructure across the country.

The development was disclosed during separate meetings between officials of the power company and representatives of both state governments, including Secretaries to the State Governments and Commissioners of Energy.

The delegation, led by the Chief Commercial Officer, Babatunde Daramola-Oniru, said the engagements were necessary to ensure alignment ahead of project execution.

What the govt is saying

According to a statement issued by the company’s Communications Lead, Magdalene Abang, the meetings focused on accelerating Phase 1 of the PPI and strengthening coordination with host states.

Daramola-Oniru said early collaboration remains central to the delivery of power infrastructure projects

“These meetings are a critical component of the ongoing efforts to accelerate Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape,” he said.

He added that project success depends on cooperation beyond technical work.

“The success of the PPI goes beyond technical execution; it is rooted in strong partnerships with state governments, host communities, and key stakeholders,” he stated.

Scope of the project

In Ebonyi, discussions centred on the proposed Ugwaji–Okposi 330kV double-circuit line, expected to improve electricity supply and support critical public assets.

Professor Grace Umezurike, Secretary to the State Government, pledged full support for implementation.

“In Ebonyi, the significance of this intervention cannot be overstated; it is the backbone required to power our international airport, our hospitals, and our schools,” she said.

In Enugu, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, linked the initiative to the state’s long-term vision.

“This partnership aligns perfectly with His Excellency’s vision to transform Enugu into a modern smart city. A robust and reliable power network is the prerequisite for the digital and industrial revolution we are building,” he said.

What you should know

The Presidential Power Initiative was launched to address constraints across Nigeria’s electricity value chain, particularly in transmission and distribution.

Nigeria has an installed generation capacity above 10,000MW. However, available supply has remained significantly lower due to infrastructure limitations.

Projects under the initiative include the rehabilitation of transmission lines, installation of transformers, and expansion of substations. The current phase involves upgrades expected to increase the amount of electricity transmitted across the grid.

The PPI is structured in phases and implemented in partnership with international technical providers. Previous phases involved the deployment of mobile substations and upgrades to existing facilities.

The planned 4,000MW addition is tied to these ongoing upgrades. Timelines depend on the completion of transmission and related infrastructure projects
